The week is over. I found it went by quickly, but that is not to say I found it productive. I didn't do any major cleaning. Luke had one appointment. I only had one night-time activity because I didn't have a car. And, no, I did not start packing. So why did my week feel so busy? On a daily basis, I felt productive. But the things that I was productive in, were waiting to be done again the next day. Sometimes this aspect of life, especially of being a wife and mom, gets a bit old.
One thing I did do that was out of the ordinary this week was drive to Bardstown Friday morning to sell "Kentucky Pies" with others from our missions team going to Scotland in July. I sat outside of Walmart for 6 hours and we sold 9 pies. This is not a lot of money. Hopefully I earned enough to pay for the gas it took to make the 50 minute drive. If not, it was a nice change of solitude and quietness. And I got some sun on my shoulders and upper arms - I had a bit of a farmer's tan.
As I was driving home from Bardstown yesterday, for some reason my mind drifted to the world we live in today in 2006. It's such a high-pressure world, full of technology and new developments. I can't help but resent much of the modern characteristics of the US. It feels like such a different world even from when I was a kid. And it makes me sad that my kids won't know any different. Protecting your kids and keeping them in a "bubble" is often a criticized characteristic of parents. This method is becoming more and more attractive to this mom. I don't want my kids to be like a fish out of water in society, but I also hope to have a home that is the antithesis of this world as we know. I don't want my kids to go to school when they're 3 or 4. Some of them might not even be ready when they're 5. I don't want them to have some activity or practice to go to every night of the week. I don't want them to be in school all day only to come home to hours of homework. I don't want their eyes to be glued to the tv, unable to appreciate the great outdoors. I don't want them to be constantly "connected" on the computer (disconnecting them from everyone around them), and I certainly don't want them have cell phones before they're even past puberity. I just want a simple life. Is that too much to ask?
So there they are - some random thoughts from my mundane week. I suppose "mundane" isn't the right word for it. Nothing's mundane with Luke. He's always making sure life is interesting. This week he covered his hands and legs in mud, drew on his hand with a red marker, took a poopy diaper off of himself and helped himself to a pie that was sitting on the counter. Oh, and his favorite word now is "no." He says it all the time. Lovely.

Amen! I feel the same way sometimes especially about the house! Wow - it's all going to have be redone tomorrow. :)
I long for the simple life too for our children. We have this world of technology to help us get work done more quickly, only to find we have more work to fill up our time. This business of going to school at 3 and 4? Ridiculous! I saw a special on the news where parents in NY have to get on a waiting list for years to get into a good pre-school. When what they're going to learn at pre-school, their parents could teach at home! Okay enough of my soapbox.
Katie,
I don't know if you would remember me, or even know me for that matter...but I graduated from Inter-City in 2004. I remember Chris when he went to Inter-City-a long time ago. We're friends with the Griffith's too, so that's kind of the connection. Anyways, I work at Starbucks in Allen Park, and I saw a note up for my manager to call Chris. I'll make sure to put in a good word for him if I see my manager soon, and if you have any questions we can keep in contact. I don't know how you guys thought of Starbucks, but maybe you guys know Katey Brown works there too. Anyways, I just wanted to say I hope everything works out! -Mallory Colomina-
Mallory - Hi! Thanks for leaving a comment. Your last name is familiar to me - probably through Christina or something. Any help you could give Chris getting into a Starbucks store would be GREATLY appreciated! He's worked at Starbucks here for about a year and a half. I did know that Katey works at one. Chris' manager also knows the district mgr. there I guess, so was hoping to help him along too. What store do you work at? We'll be living really close to the new one on Outer Dr (I think that's where it is anyway.) Thanks Mallory!
Totally agree dear. I used to think overprotective parents were naive and silly to limit their children so much. Now that I've got Chloe I want to be the one to introduce her to the world, not let the world introduce itself.
Oh my, I'm the same about the house. I usually find anything else to do around the house but dust . . . I won't bother you anymore about the packing. :)
Next time I see my manager, I'll mention it and see what she says. It should be helpful that he's worked at Starbucks before, plus the connections he has with our DM. I do work at the one on Outer Drive and Southfield. It's really busy, but enjoyable. I would just say that it was hard for me to get used to working at a new store (only open since October), alot of communication and organizational issues needed/still need to be resolved. But really, its not that bad. Three of us from Inter-City work there, Katey, Kenny Sherf and I. I'll make sure to tell you if I hear anything.
Thanks Mallory. Chris works at a pretty busy store right now, and really likes it. For some reason, his store has had at least 5 mrgs since he's been there, so he's accustomed to organizational challenges! Could you tell Katey hi for me? I used to work with her up in the offices at N-land. Chris knows Kenny too. His bro Mike was in our wedding.
I have to say amen on the house work! and oh wait I don't even have a little one yet!! Yikes! Well, I guess for me I have been trying to hit the deeper cleaning as of late, knowing that in the future I won't have much time for this. The only problem with that is that the "basics" tend to get left by the wayside. Well, I only have a little over a week before Shannon and my parents come, now there is some motivation:-)Hey, by the way when are you moving to Detroit. I would love to get together! Oh and I saw that Detroit is getting an IKEA next month. Are you familiar with those? I know I will be going, soon I hope! Yipee!!
