I know it's not Christmas, which I would argue is the most wonderful time of the year. But, tomorrow is Chris' first day of school, which reminds me of that wonderful commercial that had a fairly long run. I believe it was for Office Max. You know the one. The dad is pushing his cart along (skipping, actually), throwing school supplies into the cart, while his kids mope behind - all while "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" is being sung in all its glory. (And as I think of this commercial, I simultaneously picture my bff's dad being the guy in the commercial. Shout out to Michayla!)
So, like I said, tomorrow is Chris' first official day of school. He only has one class on Wednesday mornings and two on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The way the PhD program at Wheaton works is a bit different for each student. For Chris, he has 40 required credit hours - some students have as many as 60. In addition to his credit hours (which include "supervised research"), he will have 10 hours per week of assistance to give a professor at the college (including editing, research, grading, etc.), and the remainder of his time will be spent researching and working on his dissertation. Chris is a New Testament student, and his focus is on the usage of the Old Testament in the New Testament - specifically, the use of the text from Deut. 6:4 (Hear O Israel . . . You shall love the Lord your God . . . - this is called the Shema) in the Pauline writings of the New Testament. Yeah, make sense of that one. :) I really do love learning about how the Old Testament is so crucial to the writing of the New; or should I say, I love seeing the Messiah - Jesus - in the Old Testament. He's all over the place, though "Jesus" is never named. And as I'm reading to Luke from his Bible storybooks (I would HIGHLY recommend both The Big Picture Story Bible and The Jesus Storybook Bible), I love starting to explain to him how just as the prince Joseph forgave his brothers for their sin against him and saved their lives during the famine, one day another Prince would come, forgiving and saving US!
On a lighter and more frivilous note, Chris and I have begun the downward spiral of watching "24." We are just starting, so are 6 seasons behind the rest of the world. Like most everyone else, we have become captivated. Sucked in. Hooked.
Well, I must run. I just realized that I forgot to get Chris a new Trapper Keeper! The horror! I'm gonna run out and get it as soon as we finish arguing about whether our children will make book covers out of paper bags or will use the nifty kind you can now buy at a store. Chris insists that he will help them make them himself. I say, yeah right! :)

good for you chris. jason started school today, but i don't think he is so excited.
I agree with Chris, make them out of paper bags and do some creative coloring! What a funny thing to debate about. :)
Congrats to you all on your first day in this schooling adventure! Sounds like a nice schedule for everyone. Will you see him much during the week? What weekly activities do you and Luke have planned?
THANK YOU for the Bible storybook recommendations. We have a really small one we've been using for Chloe but we need to graduate to something bigger and better. I've been coming up with nuttin' from the libraries and local bookstores. Where'd you get those?
We started watching 24 but it got too violent for me. :( I'm becoming a wuss in my old age.
i had to laugh when you said "Trapper keeper!" Made me wanna throw on a pair of acid washed jeans and listen to 80's music! LOL
Janelle: We can't wait to see you in 2 days! Woohoo! We made yummy cupcakes and rice crisp treats today. Only zuchinni bread to go . . .
Al: Hm, I just don't know that Chris is going to be the one sitting down with the chilluns and helping them make creative book covers. :) Chris will probably have a workload of about 40 hours each week (incl. classes). Sometimes that will undoubtedly be more, but hopefully we'll see enough of him - probably for sure at lunches. Luke's and my weekly activites (tentatively) are storytime at the library and a Bible study at church. We also have become coloring addicts. I should post my pictures. :) I bought both of the books on Amazon. They combined for a bit cheaper price. Worth every penny.
Shyla: Hey New Mama! How's life with 2 boys? Let me know how it goes. I'm a little worn out and frazzled from a day of have my body poked, jumped on and walked on all day by my 3 year old. I'm praying my 2nd son will be an artsy-fartsy, mellow type of lad.
Paper bag and markers good idea. Maybe Luke could decorate one as an incentive for Chris. (As if Chris needed one?)
I'm still stuck with no transportation so don't see anyone. How is your Grandma doing?
I'm sooo excited for Chris - what an amazing opportunity he has before him - and how cool that you have such a love for his area of study!
However- you forgot to tell us about the most important "school supply" of all - what lunchbox will he be sporting on the Wheaton campus?!?!?! Spiderman? Power Rangers? Nascar? GI Joe? Paper bags? This is a VERY important part, you know! :) hee hee - glad you're settling in well!
Joyce: I'm sorry you're stuck with no transportation! That's rough. My grandma is doing MUCH better now. It took a good 3 weeks, but she is now able to sleep in her bed, and can do some things around the house.
Brenda: Ah, the lunch box dilemna. He would probably desire to rotate between Spiderman, Batman and Teenage Mutin Ninja Turtles. But, he usually comes home and has lunch with us! Very nice! :)
