No Cricity!! (Translated: No Electricity!)

Did ya hear about the storms ravaging the Chicago area yesterday? Yep, they weren't a whole lot of fun, and I know we weren't in the middle of the worst of it. But, our power did go out yesterday afternoon around 3:00 and didn't come on today until around noon! We were dying!! It was a rough night of sleep - especially for Chris and me. The house was so sticky and warm with no AC! It was a pretty stinky time to happen too, because Chris had his German exam this morning at Wheaton College. He woke up with a headache, desperately needing a cup of coffee, so we showered (thankfully, we have a gas water heater, so we could take showers with the help of a big flashlight!), and headed to Donald's for breakfast. I had a dr's appt. at 10:00, so I dropped Chris off at school, Luke off at Christine's (Thank you SO much Christine!) and headed to the Midwifery. (I'm actually seeing a nurse midwife, not a doctor.) My appointment went well, and on my way back I stopped at home to check on the situation. Still no power. So, I hung out with Luke at Christine's for a few hours, and when we got back around 2:00, lamps were on all over the place - we had power (or "cricity" as Luke calls it)! We are all very tired, but very thankful to be sitting in a cool house with the lights on and charging technology. (I brought my cell phone with me to the midwifery to charge it.) I think we'll all sleep better tonight!

In other news, I have not found the cord to connect my camera to the computer. This is a major bummer, because I took all sorts of pictures of the house to show you! I think we're going to have to buy a new one. Also this week, I made a chart for Luke, hoping to provide more structure and routine to our days. So far, it has helped (though we haven't really looked at it today). Luke thrived on a schedule and routine when he was an infant, but now that he's 3 and doesn't even take regular naps anymore, I've found that our days are sometimes free-for-alls. I think this will help. For some reason, I keep getting error messages when I try to upload the chart for you to see. I took a pic of Luke holding it - he of course is a charming cutie. But, you'll just have to imagine them.

What do you do with your pre-schoolers to provide structure and routine?

oh wow! I was wondering if any of our midwest friends was affected by the storms...i forgot about you since you guys just moved there. lack of ac is the worst when you're pregnant! i'm glad it finally came back on there and christine is there to help you guys out.

We were in the same situation last night. We are in Joliet and it is a mess outside...but if I remember correctly this happened last year too! Glad to hear you are cooling off again.
Structure? What is that? No, really, our summer has been so busy it seems we have no structure in our home these days! But it comes in the fall with school starting. I love routine, so I like to try to do the same things with the kids as “daily” as possible. Our meals, play and rest time we try to have at the same time daily, and a time in the morning for drawing or coloring. During the summer months we try to go outside in the morning before it’s too hot, but in the winter we try to go out in the afternoon when it may be a little warmer. We also go to storytime at the library every wednesday, which they love.

I can't believe how close we are to one another. We live in Rockford, IL and those storms were horrible. One of the guys I work with was on the phone with his girlfriend and she works in Wheaton. The storm was right on top of her when she was on her "late" lunch break. A tree fell right next to her car while she was driving back to work and then rushed her inside because of the funnel clouds and down to the basement!

I am so glad that you were able to get your "cricity" back on and hopefully you will sleep better. I think tonight is the first night in over a week that I shouldn't wake up to a thunderstorm and the kids crying!!

Have a great nights rest...oh, and how did Chris do today???

Where exactly are you in IL???

Elaine: Thanks for the ideas about routines. I'm hoping to get into a story class with Luke at the library in September.

Heather: We live in Carol Stream, right on the border of Wheaton. My aunt actually lives around Rockford - Pecatonica. Do you know where that is? We should definitely try to meet up some time! :)

PS: How's the kindergartener? And more importantly, her mommy? :)

Katie!! Pecatonica?!?! I live in Winnebago so that makes me about 5 minutes from Pecatonica. If you ever visit her you have to drive right through Bago. We need to get together that is for sure!!!

Mommy is doing well...Victoria was so upset this morning because it was Saturday and school was closed. :) Remember those days?? I think I have pretty much adjusted to it, except for the fact that now i have to be up by 5:30am so that I can have her up at 6:30.

Heather - That's great that you're so close! I haven't visited my aunt yet and don't know when I will, but I'll have to make a trip soon! That's SO cute about Victoria being upset because there's no school on Saturdays. Hilarious! How's Logan? Does he want to go to school now too?
